Vapor Barrier Installation in Halifax, NS
A thick, reinforced liner over the dirt floor and walls to block ground moisture before it ever reaches your framing and insulation.
A vapor barrier is a thick polyethylene liner laid over the dirt floor and walls of a crawl space to block ground moisture before it can rise into your home. It's the foundation of a dry crawl space, and on its own it solves a lot of the damp problems Halifax-area homes deal with.
The single biggest source of moisture in most crawl spaces isn't a leak, it's the ground itself. Bare soil constantly gives off water vapor, and in a closed space under your house that adds up fast. A vapor barrier is the layer that stops it.
We don't use the flimsy 6-mil plastic you'll find at the hardware store. We install a thick, reinforced liner rated for crawl spaces, overlap and seal the seams, and run it up the foundation walls so the whole space is cut off from the ground.
What's involved
- Clearing debris and old material off the crawl space floor
- Grading or smoothing the dirt so the liner lays flat
- Heavy reinforced polyethylene over the entire floor
- Liner carried up and sealed to the foundation walls
- Seams overlapped and taped so moisture can't sneak through
- Sealing around posts, piers, and penetrations
Barrier alone, or full encapsulation?
A good vapor barrier is a big step up from a bare dirt floor and often all a drier crawl space needs. But if your space takes on water, smells musty, or runs humid, the barrier is one part of a bigger fix. In that case we'd talk to you about full encapsulation, drainage and a dehumidifier on top of the liner. We'll tell you straight which one your home actually needs.

Vapor Barrier Installation: common questions
What's the difference between a vapor barrier and full encapsulation?
A vapor barrier is the liner that blocks ground moisture, it's one part of the job. Full encapsulation seals the floor and walls, addresses drainage, insulates, and adds humidity control. The barrier alone helps, but encapsulation is what makes the space genuinely dry and stable.
